Falling in Love
Surface · 1983"Falling in Love" was recorded at House of Music with Karen Copeland on lead vocals, David "Pic" Conley on Minimoog bass and flute, David Townsend on Fender Rhodes and guitar, Kevin Moore on drums and Gary Henry on piano and Prophet-5. David Conley and Toni Byrd produced and arranged the recording, Julian Robertson engineered it and Shep Pettibone mixed the 12-inch version. Released in 1983 as Surface's debut single, the track reached number 84 on Billboard's R&B chart and number 67 on the UK Singles Chart. Its polished electronic rhythm, prominent Minimoog bassline and Copeland's vocal established the group's early sound before their later Columbia-era hits. "Falling in Love" became a sought-after early-1980s boogie recording and remained especially prized in its full Shep Pettibone mix. That version received a dedicated vinyl reissue in 2024, reflecting the track's continuing club and collector reputation.
