The Meters · 1969
Recording

Recorded at Cosimo Matassa's studio in New Orleans for the Meters' 1969 debut album, with Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn producing. The instrumental features Art Neville on organ, Leo Nocentelli on guitar, George Porter Jr. on bass and Joseph Modeliste on drums. Cardova helped introduce the quartet's tightly interlocking instrumental approach on their debut album. Its extended running time gave the musicians more room to develop their interplay than the album's shorter singles. The recording became a source for later sample-based production, including N.W.A's She Swallowed It and Kwamé's Boy Genius. Its continued reuse extends the reach of the Meters' early recordings beyond their original audience.
