Recording

It was recorded in 1984 at Sigma Sound Studios in New York City by Madonna and Stephen Bray. Madonna and Bray co-wrote it and co-produced the finished track for its use in Desperately Seeking Susan. Released in 1985, it became Madonna’s first UK number one and one of the defining dance-pop singles of her early career. In the United States it was issued only as the B-side of the 12-inch "Angel" single, which kept it off the Billboard Hot 100. It remains one of Madonna’s signature songs and a durable club staple. The track’s film footage video, compilation appearances, and long-running radio and dance-floor presence have kept it central to her catalog.
