Sang And Dance

The Bar-Kays · 1970
Recording

Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, during the Bar-Kays' post-1967 rebuilding period, following the plane crash that killed four band members. The recording was produced by David Porter and Allen Jones, with the Bar-Kays contributing to the composition and instrumental performance. Originally released as a single on Volt Records in 1970, 'Sang And Dance' demonstrated the Bar-Kays' development as a self-contained recording group within the Stax organisation. Its rhythmic arrangement and ensemble performance reflected the group's evolving musical identity following its reconstruction. The recording remains part of the Bar-Kays' early Stax-era catalogue and has appeared on retrospective releases including The Best of the Bar-Kays and The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles, Volume 2: 1968–1971. Its inclusion in these collections preserves an example of the group's transitional period before its greater commercial success during the 1970s.
