Recording

Recorded for DMX’s third album,...And Then There Was X, with Chris Theis as recording engineer and Richard Keller on the mix; the album sessions took place at Hit Factory Criteria in Miami and Powerhouse in New York. Swizz Beatz produced the track. Released in 2000 as the second single from...And Then There Was X, it became DMX’s biggest hit, peaking at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helping make the album his best-selling release. The song also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. The track became one of DMX’s signature records and remained a durable club and sports anthem, with later artists sampling and covering it and the Los Angeles Lakers famously singing its hook after the 2000 NBA Finals. Its chorus and Swizz Beatz production kept it embedded in popular culture long after release.
