This Must Be the Place

This Must Be the Place

Talking Heads · 1983
Recording

Recorded during the 1982 sessions for Speaking in Tongues, the song grew from the band experimenting with unfamiliar instruments. Tina Weymouth played guitar, Jerry Harrison supplied synthesizer bass, and guests Wally Badarou and David Van Tieghem added synthesizer and percussion. The song marked David Byrne's deliberate attempt to write an unguarded love song. Its simple repeating instrumental patterns distinguished it from the band's more rhythmically complex recent work. Byrne's dance with a floor lamp during Stop Making Sense became one of the film's signature moments. Rolling Stone ranked the song number 123 in its 2021 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
