Recording

Talking Heads recorded “First Week / Last Week...Carefree” in 1977 during the Talking Heads: 77 sessions at Sundragon Studios and ODO Studios in New York City. David Byrne wrote the song, with Tony Bongiovi, Lance Quinn and Talking Heads producing, Ed Stasium engineering and mixing, and Lew Del Gatto and Jimmy Maelen adding saxophone, marimba and percussion. Released by Sire in 1977 on Talking Heads: 77 and as a European single, it captured the band’s early CBGB-era blend of nervous rhythmic precision and odd, conversational pop writing. Its expanded arrangement showed how the group could stretch beyond guitar-bass-drums minimalism while retaining Byrne’s clipped, anxious voice. The track remains a distinctive deep cut from Talking Heads’ debut album and a document of their first recorded lineup with Jerry Harrison. Its later remaster and acoustic-version release on expanded editions have kept it visible within the band’s early catalogue.
