Shut Em Down
Public Enemy · 1991Recording
Recorded during the Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black sessions in 1991, produced by The Bomb Squad, the track featured Chuck D's production collective working with their signature dense layering of samples and noise. Released on Apocalypse 91 in October 1991, the track was a forceful critique of corporate America and its exploitation of Black communities, arriving at a moment when Public Enemy remained one of the most politically charged acts in popular music. The Pete Rock remix, which samples Tom Scott and The California Dreamers' 'Never My Love', became one of the most celebrated remix productions of the era and is widely regarded as a landmark of early 1990s hip-hop production craft.
