Brown Sugar

D’Angelo · 1995
Recording

Recorded in 1994 during the Brown Sugar sessions at Battery Studios in New York City, with additional album work at RPM Studios in New York and the Pookie Lab in Sacramento. The title track was written and produced by D'Angelo and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, with D'Angelo handling the vocals, instruments, and arrangements. Released as D'Angelo's debut single in June 1995, it introduced his sound to a wider audience and helped establish his commercial breakthrough. It was widely praised and became one of the record's key singles, peaking at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The track remains one of D'Angelo's signature songs and a defining early statement of his style. It is closely associated with the rise of neo-soul and still stands as an influential template for organic, groove-centered R&B.
