Killing Me Softly

Killing Me Softly

Fugees · 1995
Recording

Recorded and mixed at Booga Basement Studio in Bloomfield, New Jersey. The single credits Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean as producers, with Jerry Duplessis and Pras Michel as co-producers, and Warren Riker as engineer. Released in 1996, the Fugees’ version became a major international hit and spent five weeks at No. 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart. It also helped define the group’s crossover breakthrough and brought Lauryn Hill’s lead vocal to the center of the record. It remains the Fugees’ signature single and one of the era’s most recognizable cover versions, later earning placement on major best-songs lists. Its long afterlife has kept the song central to the group’s catalog and to 1990s pop-rap history.
