Funky Buzzard

Little Oscar · 1969
Recording

Recorded by Chicago soul-blues singer and guitarist Oscar Stricklin, performing as Little Oscar, Funky Buzzard was issued as a seven-inch single on Deke Records. Written by A. Williams and produced by Karl Tarleton, it was paired with (Sing About It, Shout About) Justice. Released in 1969, Funky Buzzard formed part of Little Oscar's transition from Chicago blues towards the rhythm-driven soul recordings of the late 1960s. The independently released single illustrates the local Chicago music scene beyond the city's major record labels. Funky Buzzard was subsequently rediscovered through rare funk compilations, notably appearing as the opening track on The Sound of Funk, Volume 4, released by Goldmine Soul Supply in 1993. Its preservation on compilation albums has introduced Little Oscar's recording to later generations of soul and funk collectors.
