Mitchell recorded this instrumental interpretation of the Young Rascals’ song for Solid Soul at Royal Studios in Memphis. Joe Cuoghi produced the album, with arrangements by Mitchell. The recording showcased Mitchell’s work as a bandleader and arranger during his successful instrumental recording career. Billboard singled out Groovin’ among Solid Soul’s danceable selections in its September 1968 review. RZA sampled its guitar figure for GZA’s Liquid Swords in 1995, giving the recording a substantial second life.
