Johnny Nash · 1968Recording
Johnny Nash recorded the track in Kingston, Jamaica, during the JAD sessions made with Arthur Jenkins and Danny Sims. The song was cut at Federal Studios with Nash and Jenkins handling the production. Nash turned Sam Cooke’s song into a rocksteady-flavored single that carried his Jamaican recordings into the U.S. and UK charts. It helped establish him as an early non-Jamaican interpreter of reggae and related sounds. The recording remains one of Nash’s signature early reggae-era sides and is regularly included on his greatest-hits and anthology releases. It also helped keep Nash’s version of the Cooke song in circulation long after the original hit era.
