Hang out and Hustle

Sweet Charles · 1975
Recording

Recorded during Sweet Charles Sherrell's association with James Brown's People Records, Hang Out and Hustle featured Sherrell on lead vocals and bass. Sherrell developed the song around the experience of visiting discos with friends, incorporating a prominent bassline and dance-oriented rhythmic arrangement. Originally released in 1975 on People Records as a single backed with Together, Hang Out and Hustle reflected the emerging disco culture while retaining the rhythmic approach associated with James Brown's musical circle. Issued as People PE 656, the recording was a relatively scarce release that subsequently attracted interest among DJs and record collectors. Hang Out and Hustle gained renewed recognition through sampling, including Main Source's Just Hangin' Out and work by Naughty by Nature. Its inclusion on James Brown's Funky People, Pt. 3 in 2000, subsequent DJ re-edits and a 2024 Dynamite Cuts vinyl reissue helped preserve its reputation as a sought-after rare groove recording.
