Nobody
Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford · 1971Recorded in 1971 by the vocal quartet of Pat Hodges, Denita James, Jessica Smith and former Motown singer Carolyn Crawford, Nobody was written by Dick Cooper and Ernie Shelby. The original recording was produced by Mickey Stevenson and Clarence Paul, during the group's early association with Stevenson's Mpingo label. Released in December 1971 on Mpingo Records, distributed by Starday-King, Nobody was the label's first single and received favourable reviews in Record World and Cash Box. Its forceful group vocals and energetic arrangement attracted attention in the soul market, with the record appearing on Record World's R&B chart in February 1972. Nobody developed a lasting reputation among funk DJs and rare-record collectors, with DJ David Holmes among its notable supporters. Originally issued as a scarce seven-inch single, it was subsequently included on Early Years and Unheard Pearls 1970-1973 and reissued by BGP Records in 2025, preserving one of the quartet's most sought-after recordings.
