Recording

KRS-One wrote, produced and mixed Mad Crew for his 1993 solo debut, Return of the Boom Bap. The album sessions took place at D&D Recording and Battery Studios in New York. The track showcased KRS-One's combative delivery and lyrical authority as he moved from the Boogie Down Productions name to solo billing. Its three verses challenged rival rappers and artists willing to compromise their credibility. Logic sampled the recording on Gang Related in 2014, carrying its vocal presence into a later generation of rap. Albumism's thirtieth-anniversary retrospective singled out KRS-One's energy and intensity on the track.
