Ya Playin' Yaself

Jeru the Damaja · 1995

Recording

Recorded in 1995 and 1996 for Wrath Of The Math, the track paired Jeru the Damaja with DJ Premier during their Payday and FFRR period. DJ Premier produced the single, which was released in 1996 with One Day on related formats. Released by Payday and FFRR in 1996, Ya Playin Yaself became one of the main singles from Wrath Of The Math. It reached number 67 on the UK Official Singles Chart and extended Jerus critique of commercialism and weak emceeing. The track remains one of Jeru the Damajas signature records and a key DJ Premier production from the mid 1990s. Its message and clipped Gang Starr Foundation sound kept it prominent in underground hip hop retrospectives.
