Chameleon
Herbie Hancock · 1973Recorded between August and September 1973 at Wally Heider Studios and Different Fur Trading Co. in San Francisco, with Herbie Hancock on synthesizers, Fender Rhodes and clavinet, Bennie Maupin on reeds, Paul Jackson on electric bass, Harvey Mason on drums and Bill Summers on percussion. Produced by Hancock and David Rubinson, the recording was engineered by Fred Catero, Jeremy Zatkin, Dane Butcher and John Vieira. Released in 1973 as the opening track of Head Hunters, 'Chameleon' marked a decisive shift in Hancock's musical direction, combining an innovative synthesised bassline with extended improvisation and tightly interlocking rhythms. Its accessible groove helped establish Head Hunters as a landmark commercial success and introduced Hancock's music to audiences beyond traditional jazz listeners. 'Chameleon' became one of Hancock's signature compositions and a widely performed standard, recognised for its distinctive ARP synthesizer bassline and extended improvisational structure. Its influence extends across contemporary instrumental music, hip-hop and electronic production, while Head Hunters was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2007.
