Footsteps In the Dark (Pt. 1 & 2)
The Isley Brothers · 1977Recorded at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, during the 1976–1977 sessions for Go for Your Guns, Footsteps in the Dark featured Ronald Isley on lead vocals, Ernie Isley on guitar and drums, Marvin Isley on bass and Chris Jasper on keyboards. Written, arranged and produced by the six members of The Isley Brothers, the recording was engineered by John Holbrook and Thomas Mark. Released on T-Neck Records in April 1977, Footsteps in the Dark (Parts 1 & 2) explored romantic uncertainty and temptation through Ronald Isley's restrained vocals, Ernie Isley's expressive guitar and a distinctive rhythm arrangement. Contemporary reviews praised its sensitive songwriting and performances, while its parent album Go for Your Guns reached number one on Billboard's Top Soul Albums chart and number six on the Billboard 200. Footsteps in the Dark became one of The Isley Brothers' most influential recordings, particularly through its prominent sampling in Ice Cube's 1993 hit It Was a Good Day. Its atmospheric guitar melody, bassline and understated rhythm have sustained its popularity across generations of soul and hip-hop listeners, establishing it as an enduring highlight of the group's catalogue.
