I Had To Tell You

I Had To Tell You

The 13th Floor Elevators · 1967
Recording

Recorded in September 1967 at Walt Andrus Studios in Houston during the sessions for Easter Everywhere. Roky Erickson sang with Clementine Hall, backed by the 13th Floor Elevators, with Lelan Rogers producing and Frank Davis and Walt Andrus engineering. The song provided a quiet, acoustic contrast to the album's more expansive recordings. Its reflective duet highlighted a gentler side of the band's songwriting and Roky Erickson's vocal style. The track remains a distinctive deep cut from Easter Everywhere, an album later recognised as a landmark of 1960s psychedelia. Its restrained performance has made it one of the band's most intimate recordings.
