Dancing in Outer Space
Atmosfear · 1979Recorded in 1978–1979 at Conway Recording Studios in Hollywood, California, as part of the Pizzazz sessions. Patrice Rushen co-produced it with Charles Mims Jr. and Reggie Andrews, and the song was issued as the first single from Pizzazz. The track broke through as Patrice Rushen’s first international hit and reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Disco Top 100 and Hot Soul Singles charts while also crossing over to the Hot 100. It helped define Pizzazz as a polished disco/R&B statement at the peak of her early Elektra period. It remains one of Rushen’s signature songs and has been widely sampled, including in Kirk Franklin’s “Looking for You.” Its long afterlife on dance floors and in later house and disco reworks has kept it active in club culture.
