Pharoahe Monch · 1999Recording
Recorded at Grandma Hands Studio in Jamaica, New York, during the Internal Affairs sessions. Pharoahe Monch produced the track, Lee Stone engineered it, and DJ Total Eclipse provided turntable cuts. The debut solo single from Internal Affairs, it became Pharoahe Monch's breakout hit and a defining Rawkus Records release. It pushed an underground New York rapper onto the Billboard Hot 100 and into wider recognition. It remains Pharoahe Monch's signature song and the track most closely associated with his solo career. Its hook and production kept it central to late-1990s hip-hop retrospectives and Rawkus-era playlists.
