Repeat After Me
The Three Sounds · 1969Recorded on 26 August 1969 at Liberty Studios in Los Angeles, Repeat After Me featured Gene Harris on piano, Henry Franklin on bass, Carl Burnett on drums, Freddie Robinson on guitar, Buddy Collette on flute, David Duke on French horn and Alan Estes on percussion, alongside orchestral strings. Composed, arranged and conducted by Monk Higgins, the recording formed part of the sessions for The Three Sounds' final studio album, Soul Symphony. Released on Blue Note Records in 1969, Repeat After Me appeared as the opening track on the second side of Soul Symphony, following the album's extended orchestral title composition. Its rhythmic interplay, prominent piano and expanded ensemble arrangements reflected the group's evolution beyond its original piano-trio format under Monk Higgins's musical direction. Repeat After Me remains part of The Three Sounds' final studio recordings, documenting Gene Harris's collaboration with Monk Higgins during the group's late-1960s development. Its preservation through Blue Note reissues and retrospective collections has helped sustain interest in the group's later orchestral recordings among jazz listeners and record collectors.
