(Don’t Fear) The Reaper

Blue Öyster Cult · 1976
Recording

Written and sung by guitarist Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser, the track was recorded at Record Plant in New York for Agents of Fortune. Producers David Lucas, Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman worked with engineer Shelly Yakus, developing Roeser's home demo into the finished recording. The song became the band's breakthrough single and highest-charting US hit, reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its distinctive guitar riff and restrained vocals brought the band a substantially wider audience. The recording became a lasting radio staple and inspired Saturday Night Live's celebrated 2000 More Cowbell sketch. Its guitar riff remains the band's most recognisable musical signature.
