Put the Funk on You

Put the Funk on You

Fatback Band · 1975
Recording

Recorded in 1975 at Blue Rock Studio in New York City for the Fatback Band's album Yum Yum, with Eddie Korvin and Jim Rathbun engineering and the recordings subsequently mixed at Mediasound. Led by drummer Bill Curtis, the ensemble featured Johnny King on guitar, Johnny Flippin on bass, Gerry Thomas on keyboards, George Williams on trumpet and Earl Shelton on tenor saxophone. Released in 1975 on Event Records, 'Put the Funk on You' was written and arranged by Bill Curtis and appeared as the fourth track on Yum Yum. Its tightly coordinated ensemble performance and percussion-driven arrangement reflected the band's established approach to dance-oriented recordings during a period of growing international recognition. The recording remains part of the Fatback Band's influential mid-1970s catalogue and has been preserved through subsequent reissues of Yum Yum, including releases by Southbound Records. Its continued circulation among collectors and specialist DJs reflects the enduring appeal of the band's rhythm-centred arrangements and live ensemble playing.
