The Smurf
Tyrone Brunson · 1982Recording
Recorded in Washington, D.C. during the Sticky Situation sessions, with Carl Beatty handling engineering, recording, and mixing and Russell Timmons overseeing the production. The track was issued as a Believe In A Dream single and also appeared on Brunson’s debut album Sticky Situation. The Smurf was Brunson’s breakout electro-funk single and became closely associated with the early-1980s Smurf craze. It established him as a notable figure in the emerging dance-funk crossover scene. The track remained a staple for electro, boogie, and early club-dance compilations, and it is still remembered as Brunson’s signature record. Its hook and groove have kept it in circulation through reissues, mixes, and samples.
