Recording

Taana Gardner recorded No Frills for West End Records in 1981, continuing her collaboration with songwriter and producer Kenton Nix after Heartbeat. Nix produced the single in association with Henry Batts for Kenix Productions, with Larry Levan's 12-inch mix giving the record its club form. No Frills was released by West End as Gardner's follow-up to Heartbeat. It reached number 52 on Billboard's dance chart and extended her run within the early-1980s New York club scene. The track remained a Paradise Garage-era West End title through later reissues and digital remasters. Its lean vocal arrangement and Larry Levan-associated mix kept it in circulation among disco, boogie, and rare-groove collectors.
