This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us
Sparks · 1974Recording
Produced by Muff Winwood, the track was recorded at London's Ramport Studios in November 1973, with overdubs at Island's Basing Street studio in January 1974. Richard Digby-Smith engineered the sessions, and Bill Price mixed the recording at AIR Studios. The single became Sparks' British breakthrough after the Mael brothers relocated to London and recruited a new band. Their memorable Top of the Pops performance helped propel it to number two on the UK Singles Chart. Its dramatic vocal leaps, keyboard riff and gunshot effects became defining features of Sparks' best-known song. Later interpretations included a Siouxsie and the Banshees cover and Sparks' 1997 collaboration with Faith No More.
