Stay Away
Charles Bradley · 2011Recording
Recorded at Dunham Studios in Brooklyn with Menahan Street Band and produced by Thomas Brenneck. It was issued as Bradley’s cover of Nirvana’s song and later appeared on the expanded No Time for Dreaming release and the 2012 Daptone single with Run It Back. The track reworked Nirvana’s grunge original into a slow-burning Daptone-era soul performance, and it drew notice as one of 2011’s standout covers. It helped define Bradley’s early reputation beyond the album’s original material. The cover remained one of Bradley’s best-known interpretations and was later included on the posthumous Black Velvet compilation. It continued to circulate as a favorite crossover example of his retro-soul approach to modern rock material.
