Break My Stride
Matthew Wilder · 1983"Break My Stride" was recorded at Pasha Studios in Hollywood for Matthew Wilder's debut album, I Don't Speak the Language. Peter Bunetta, Rick Chudacoff and Bill Elliott produced, with Wilder and Elliott playing Prophet-5 synthesizers and Bunetta programming the Oberheim DMX. Released as Wilder's debut single in 1983, the song became an international hit, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and number four in the UK. Its success established Wilder as a recording artist before his later career as a songwriter and producer. The song became a durable 1980s pop standard, spawning successful covers by Unique II and Blue Lagoon. Its refrain was also interpolated in Puff Daddy's 1997 hit "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down," and the original experienced renewed popularity through social media decades later.
