Cajun Moon
Herbie Mann · 1976Recorded in New York around 1975 for Herbie Mann's album Surprises, Cajun Moon features Mann on flute and Cissy Houston on lead vocals, supported by David 'Fathead' Newman on tenor saxophone, Pat Rebillot on keyboards, Hugh McCracken and Jerry Friedman on guitars, Tony Levin on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, and Armen Halburian and Ralph MacDonald on percussion. Produced by Mann, arranged by Rebillot and engineered by Jimmy Douglass, the recording reinterprets J.J. Cale's composition. Released in 1976 on Surprises and as an Atlantic Records single, Cajun Moon transformed J.J. Cale's understated 1974 composition into an extended, rhythmically rich arrangement featuring Cissy Houston's expressive vocals and Mann's flute improvisations. The recording demonstrated Mann's continuing exploration of contemporary popular songwriting through jazz instrumentation and a prominent rhythm section. Cajun Moon remains a distinctive recording in Herbie Mann's Atlantic catalogue, celebrated for its extended instrumental passages, Cissy Houston's vocal performance and the interplay between flute, saxophone and rhythm section. Its appearance on subsequent compilations and reissues has helped preserve this interpretation of J.J. Cale's composition among listeners and collectors of 1970s recordings.
