The Blackbyrds · 1975
Recording

Recorded in 1975 with producers Alan Abrahams and Harvey Mason, the track featured the core Blackbyrds lineup of Donald Byrd's Howard University students, with Keith Killgo on drums and vocals, Joe Hall on bass, and Kevin Toney on keyboards. Released on Fantasy Records as the lead single from City Life, the track reached number four on the Billboard R&B chart and became the group's biggest crossover moment, capturing the laid-back, seductive side of mid-seventies funk and cementing the Blackbyrds as a commercial force independent of Byrd's own recordings. The track became one of the most sampled records in hip-hop history, its combination of languid groove, sparse percussion, and sensual lyrical imagery making it a perennial resource for producers across four decades of sample-based music.
