Hi Heel Sneakers

Tommy Tucker · 1964
Recording

Tommy Tucker recorded Hi-Heel Sneakers in 1963 with producer Herb Abramson before the recording was leased to Checker. The performance placed Tuckers vocal and piano-led approach into a sparse, rolling band arrangement. Released by Checker in 1964, the single reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 23 on the UK singles chart. It became Tuckers signature hit and one of the last major blues-based singles from the Chess and Checker catalogue to cross over nationally. Hi-Heel Sneakers became a widely recorded standard, with later versions by Elvis Presley, Johnny Rivers, Ramsey Lewis, Jose Feliciano, Chuck Berry, and Paul McCartney. The song was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 2017.
