World A Reggae (Out In The Street They Call It Murder)

Recording

Ini Kamoze recorded World A Reggae, also issued as World A Music, with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare at Channel One in Kingston, with Soljie Hamilton engineering. The track was first released on Taxi in 1983 and then included on Kamoze's 1984 self-titled Island and Taxi mini-album. The record introduced Kamoze's cool observational delivery over Sly and Robbie's hard early-1980s production style. It became one of the defining tracks from his debut period and helped establish the World Jam rhythm family. World A Reggae became a cornerstone reggae source record after Damian Marley sampled its opening line for Welcome to Jamrock. Its phrase out in the street they call it murder remains one of the most widely recognized vocal moments in modern reggae and dancehall.
