I Wouldn't Change A Thing (Mixed)
Coke Escovedo · 1976Recorded in 1976 at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco, 'I Wouldn't Change a Thing' featured percussionist Coke Escovedo alongside drummer Glenn Symmonds, bassist Mark Phillips, guitarists Gábor Szabó and Abel Zarate, keyboardist Frank Mercurio and vocalist Errol Knowles. Produced by Patrick Gleeson, the recording was a reinterpretation of Johnny Bristol's 1975 composition, originally released on his album Feeling the Magic. Released in 1976 on Mercury Records as part of Escovedo's second solo album Comin' at Ya!, the track transformed Bristol's composition through an energetic arrangement built around a prominent opening drum break, layered percussion, rhythmic guitar and expressive vocals. The recording became one of the album's standout tracks, demonstrating Escovedo's ability to combine his Latin percussion background with contemporary American dance music. The recording became an influential breakbeat through its inclusion in the Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilation series and extensive use by hip-hop producers. Its opening drums were sampled by Eric B. & Rakim on 'Follow the Leader' and Moby on 'Natural Blues', while continued interest among DJs and record collectors established it as one of Escovedo's most enduring recordings.
