Recording

LFO recorded LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix) in Leeds after Mark Bell and Gez Varley passed their tape to DJ Martin, who helped arrange the track for club play. The 1990 Warp Records release credits Bell, Varley, and Williams as writers, with LFO producing. The single became Warp's early breakthrough and reached number 12 on the UK Official Singles Chart in August 1990. Its heavy sub-bass and Speak and Spell vocal tag helped carry the northern bleep sound from local parties into the national chart. LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix) remains one of Warp's defining early records and a signature track of the original Bell and Varley lineup. Its bass-led production is still cited as a landmark in the development of British electronic club music.
