Barely Breaking Even
The Universal Robot Band · 1982The track was made for Greg Carmichael's Moonglow label with Leroy Burgess on lead vocal and arrangement duties, drawing on players associated with Kleeer. Patrick Adams was part of the Carmichael-Adams-Burgess production circle behind the Universal Robot Band's early-1980s recordings. Issued as a U.S. 12-inch single in 1982, it became an underground club record rather than a national chart hit. Its reputation grew through New York dance and boogie circles, where the Carmichael, Adams, and Burgess connection was especially valued. The track became a collector favourite and directly inspired the name of the British reissue label Barely Breaking Even. Later reissues and remixes kept it active in DJ culture, including remastered Moonglow editions and new remix versions.
