Tracy Chapman · 1988
Recording

Recorded in 1987 at Powertrax in Hollywood, California, for Tracy Chapman’s debut album. David Kershenbaum produced the track, with Chapman recording live with Larry Klein and Denny Fongheiser on the final take. Released as the lead single from Tracy Chapman’s 1988 debut album, the song turned her into a major new voice. It became a top-ten hit and helped earn Chapman Grammy recognition for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The song became Chapman's signature recording and has remained one of her most enduring works. Its continued cultural reach has been reinforced by frequent covers, especially Luke Combs’ 2023 version and the 2024 Grammy duet with Chapman.
