Recording

Recorded in 1988 as a pair of demos cut at Web’s house/510 South Franklin in Long Island, with Paul Shabazz and Sugar Bear discussing the track in later recollections. The session centered on the Talking Heads sample and the companion cut “Ready to Penetrate.” The single became a notable underground rap record in 1988 for its bold use of the Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime” and for its heavy rotation on UK club and dance floors. It reached the UK singles chart in December 1988. The record remained influential through its widely sampled drum break and its presence in later hip-hop and dance productions, with WhoSampled listing dozens of later songs drawing from it. It is still treated as a classic of late-1980s hip-hop sample culture.
