Peace
S.O.U.L · 1972Recorded at Groove Sound Studios in New York in 1972, Peace of Mind featured Cleveland group S.O.U.L. (Sounds of Unity and Love), including Gus Hawkins on saxophone and flute, Larry Hancock on organ, Walter Winston on guitar, Lee Lovett on bass and vocals, and Paul Stubblefield on drums. Produced by Richard Talmadge and Steve Feldman, the composition was credited to Hancock, Hawkins, Lovett, Stubblefield and Winston. Released on Musicor Records in 1972 as part of S.O.U.L.'s second album, Can You Feel It?, Peace of Mind also appeared as the B-side of To Mend a Broken Heart. The recording showcased the Cleveland ensemble's instrumental musicianship and contributed to an album that later became highly prized among collectors of rare grooves and original breakbeats. Peace of Mind gained renewed recognition through its use in Main Source's 1991 recording Peace Is Not the Word to Play and the track of the same name by Top Choice Clique. Renewed interest in S.O.U.L.'s recordings among hip-hop producers, DJs and collectors helped drive the reissue of Can You Feel It? by BGP Records, part of Ace Records.
