Peg
Steely Dan · 1977Recording
Recorded in 1977 for Aja, the track features Donald Fagen's lead vocal, Michael McDonald's layered backing vocals, Chuck Rainey's bass and Rick Marotta's drums. Jay Graydon supplied the guitar solo after several other session guitarists had attempted it. As Aja's first single, Peg brought the album's meticulous studio arrangements to a broad radio audience. Contemporary Billboard and Cash Box reviews praised its instrumental playing, rhythmic appeal and harmonic hooks. De La Soul sampled the recording prominently on Eye Know in 1989, introducing it to another generation. Its guitar solo and intricately layered backing vocals remain celebrated examples of Steely Dan's studio craftsmanship.
