Son of a Preacher Man

Son of a Preacher Man

The Gaylettes · 1969
Recording

The Gaylettes recorded the song in Kingston, Jamaica for Federal Records, with Ken Lazarus and Richard Khouri credited on the original single. It was issued as a Jamaican 7-inch release in 1969. The track turned Dusty Springfield’s hit into a Jamaican soul/reggae cover and became one of the Gaylettes’ best-known Federal sides. It helped define the group’s place in the late-1960s Jamaican vocal scene. The recording remained in circulation on reggae compilations and reissue anthologies. It also gained later hip-hop visibility when Everlast, Divine Styler, and Sick Jacken sampled it.
