Dionne Warwick · 1964
Recording

Recorded in November 1963 at Bell Sound Studios in New York, with Dionne Warwick accompanied by arranger Burt Bacharach and New York session musicians. Bacharach and Hal David wrote the song, and Bacharach produced and arranged the recording. Released in 1964, the single reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of Warwick's defining early hits. Its restrained vocal and sophisticated orchestral arrangement helped establish the Bacharach-David-Warwick partnership as a major force in American pop. The song became a pop standard and one of the most widely interpreted compositions in the Bacharach-David catalogue. Later versions by Isaac Hayes, the Stranglers and others demonstrated its adaptability across soul, rock and electronic music.
