Fourty Days

Billy Brooks · 1974
Recording

Recorded at RPM Studios in Los Angeles for Brooks' 1974 album Windows of the Mind, the track was co-produced by Brooks and Ray Charles. The album sessions featured bassist Larry Gales, drummer Clarence Johnston and saxophonist Herman Riley. Closing Brooks' debut solo album, the track brought his trumpet playing and composition to the foreground after years accompanying artists including Ray Charles. Its layered brass and interlocking rhythms exemplified the album's emphasis on ensemble playing. A Tribe Called Quest sampled the recording on Luck of Lucien from their 1990 debut album, establishing its reputation among DJs and record collectors. Windows of the Mind received an official remastered reissue through Wewantsounds in 2020.
