Shorty Rides Again
Eddie Harris & Les McCann · 1971Recording
Recorded in January 1971 at Atlantic Studios in New York, the track pairs Harris's saxophone with McCann's electric piano, supported by Cornell Dupree, Jerry Jemmott and Bernard Purdie. Harris and McCann co-wrote the piece, which opens Second Movement. The track launched the studio follow-up to the duo's successful Swiss Movement collaboration. Its extended electric instrumentation and rhythmic interplay marked their move beyond the earlier album's live acoustic setting. The recording became a source for hip-hop producers, supplying samples for Eric B. & Rakim's Hypnotic and Erick Sermon's Imma Gitz Mine. Its prominent rhythms helped carry the duo's music into later sampling culture.
