Recording

Recorded in 1972 by Little Royal and the Swingmasters, 'Razor Blade' was an instrumental composed by Andrew Simms and produced by Little Royal Torrence and Huey P. Meaux. The recording was produced at Studio Stereo Center and released through the Houston-based Tri-Us label. Released in March 1972 as the B-side of 'Jealous', 'Razor Blade' featured a driving rhythm section, prominent brass passages and tightly arranged instrumental breaks. While 'Jealous' became Little Royal's commercial breakthrough, 'Razor Blade' attracted attention in its own right and inspired a dance craze. The recording became a recognised breakbeat among hip-hop DJs and rare groove collectors, particularly for its distinctive horn riffs and rhythmic passages. It subsequently provided sampling material for artists including Ice-T and J Dilla, while reissues of the album Jealous helped introduce the original recording to later generations.
