Got To Get Your Own (7" Short Edit)
Reuben Wilson · 1975Recorded in 1975 at Sound Exchange Studios in New York City, 'Got to Get Your Own' featured Reuben Wilson on Hammond organ and keyboards with his studio ensemble the Cost of Living. The musicians included Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie on drums, Richard Tee on keyboards, Gordon Edwards and Wilbur Bascomb on bass, and Pee Wee Ellis on tenor saxophone, with production by Esmond Edwards, arrangements by Wilson and Brad Baker, and engineering by Skip Juried. Originally released in 1975 on Cadet Records, the composition was written by Reuben Wilson and producer Esmond Edwards and appeared as the closing track of Wilson's album Got to Get Your Own. Combining prominent organ and keyboard passages, tightly arranged horns and a driving rhythm section, the recording became a popular dance-floor selection in Britain, where it was subsequently issued as a seven-inch single on Chess Records in 1976. The recording became a celebrated selection in Britain's rare groove and acid jazz movements, gaining renewed popularity among DJs and collectors during the 1980s. Its success helped revive Wilson's performing career, leading to international touring and renewed recognition during the 1990s, when he revisited the composition on his album Organ Donor.
