Inner City Blues
Reuben Wilson · 1972Recorded in New York City in 1972 for Reuben Wilson's album The Sweet Life, the recording features Wilson on Hammond organ, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Ramon Morris on tenor saxophone, Lloyd Davis on guitar, Mickey Bass on bass and Thomas Derrick on drums. Produced by Sonny Lester and engineered by Malcolm Addey, it is an instrumental interpretation of Marvin Gaye's 'Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)'. Originally released on Groove Merchant Records in 1972, 'Inner City Blues' opened The Sweet Life and presented Marvin Gaye's socially conscious composition through Wilson's organ-led ensemble. The performance marked a harder-edged direction for Wilson following his Blue Note recordings, emphasising tightly coordinated rhythms, horn arrangements and extended instrumental interplay. The recording became part of Wilson's enduring catalogue of instrumental interpretations, later appearing on the 1975 double-album compilation Bad Stuff!, which combined The Sweet Life with The Cisco Kid. Subsequent reissues have preserved the performance and contributed to renewed appreciation of Wilson's early-1970s recordings among DJs, collectors and jazz listeners.
