Recording

Written by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson, the recording was produced by Mickie Most, with Brown singing lead. Alexis Korner contributed spoken passages, Cozy Powell played drums, and Phil Dennys arranged the strings. Released in 1973, the single confronted racism through the story of an interracial couple facing parental rejection. Its UK top-ten success brought that subject into mainstream pop. Stories took their cover to number one in America in 1973, establishing the song internationally. Later interpretations included recordings by Roy Ayers and the Quireboys.
