The Old Law

The Old Law

Father John Misty · 2026
Recording

Recorded as a standalone Father John Misty single after the Mahashmashana album cycle, with Josh Tillman and Drew Erickson producing. Michael Harris and Jonathan Wilson mixed the track at Fivestar Studios in Los Angeles, and Adam Ayan mastered it at Ayan Mastering. Released by Sub Pop on 9 January 2026, The Old Law was Father John Misty's first new single after Mahashmashana. Previously known to fans as God's Trash, it had entered his live set in autumn 2024 before receiving an official studio release. The song documents a live-set favourite becoming a standalone release in Father John Misty's 2026 catalogue. Its arrangement and lyric extended the reflective, satirical mode of Mahashmashana while keeping his post-album campaign active.
